Focus area 02
Books, learning materials and school supplies
Making sure the basic tools of learning — books, notebooks, stationery — are not the reason a child stops.
Proposed — not yet active
The problem
Notebooks, pens, geometry boxes, reference books and school bags add up. For families with uncertain incomes, these recurring costs can quietly push learning down the list of priorities.
Who it is for
- School-going children from households facing financial hardship
- Community learning spaces and small libraries
Proposed approach
- Needs-based distribution of school supplies at the start of each term, in coordination with schools and community members
- A book bank where good-condition textbooks and readers can be donated, checked and passed on
- Small reading corners in community spaces with books in Hindi and English
- Dignified distribution: no photo opportunities, no public lists of recipients
Eligibility and participation
Supplies will be distributed on the basis of need, assessed simply and respectfully. The criteria and process will be published before the first distribution.
Current status
Proposed
This is a proposed area of work. No program in this area is running yet, and there are no results to report. When a program starts, it will appear in the program directory with its start date and location.
How resources would be used
- Purchase of supplies, preferably from local shops
- Storage and transport
- Record-keeping so every item can be accounted for
Spending will be reported on the transparency page once the foundation begins receiving funds.
How outcomes will be measured
- Number of children supported, by term
- Whether the materials were the right ones (follow-up feedback)
- Book bank items received, checked and re-issued
Only verified results will be published, with the method and its limitations. See Impact.
Get involved
Donate good-condition books when collections open, or volunteer to help sort and distribute.
